Much of the waste going to the Pitkin County Solid Waste Center includes usable items that could otherwise go to those who can give them a second life. This helps the environment and helps create a sustainable model of reduce, reuse, recycle. By donating unwanted goods such as household items, construction supplies, furniture and sporting goods to the Motherlode Mercantile, you can easily get rid of stuff you no longer need and keep these items out of the landfill. It also supports an affordable shopping option for obtaining needed items.
Remember, we can only accept goods that we can resell. Sometimes it is difficult to categorize unique donations, such as pianos, artwork, antiques, equipment, etc. so if you have an item you’d like to donate, but are unsure if we will accept it, please ask.

Books and clothing are only accepted at textile drop and book drop, not at the Mercantile. Clothing is diverted to a Colorado company that donates and resells reusables locally. They recycle unusable textiles for rags or insulation. Books are picked up by a Colorado based recycle program which resells books and funds a low income reading program.
